Happy Birthday, Harper Lee, Author of “To Kill a...
Harper Lee’s only novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, a staple of high school and college reading lists, and the favorite of millions of readers. Lee, however, chose privacy over fame, and has spent most of her life out of the public eye. Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, a small town in Alabama. Her father was a lawyer and one of the...

So here's how my math class works,
notes-of-the-self: What we learn in class: 1 + 1 Homework: -55x + 47x Test: 39048240x^2(3454x + 84) + 8343x(x - 454)(354 - x) That’s why I hated math in school. And physics. And chemistry. Basically, any subject that was built on numbers.  Hah! That ‘what we learn in class’ and homework thing is so damn true. I love maths anyway.

Quotes From Randy Pausch's Last Lecture →
We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand. Have something to bring to the table, because that will make you more welcome. I probably got more from that dream and not accomplishing it than I got from any of the ones that I did accomplish. Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.

i-was-here: Someone posted a video on facebook, showing the last glimpses of Moin Akhter’s face before he was buried. And..it was just so scary. I mean, nothing he’s ever earned is going to the grave with him. Just him with his deeds, whatever he did in this world to accompany him, and nothing else. What ever he’s done is done, and there are no chances left. It got me thinking, I am so...

SC directs NADRA to include eunuchs in gender... →
manalimtiaz: Nadra had said that the applications forms for CNICs would contain the third option of ‘Khwaja sara’ (transgender) along with ‘male’ and ‘female’. This thing. I recalled about a project I was given to update site(I was a member of) with group member’s bio. I mailed and asked for that basic ‘Name, gender etc’ form to members. It was when he(a very genius fellow)...

notinthenameofislam: “Let there be no compulsion in religion.  Truth has been made clear from error.  Whoever rejects false worship and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks.  And God hears and knows all things.” (Quran 2:256) “If it had been your Lord’s will, all of the people on Earth would have believed.  Would you then compel the people so to have them...

tempdist: 4/25 3.17 AM A baby or a kid is a perfectly complete human being, yet the best they end up doing in society is amusing ‘grown ups’ with their acts popularly categorized as ‘cute’. I think this is unfair. They are more true to themselves than any fuckin one of us, they love when they mean and… ‘Sketching in such state of mind is something I couldn’t love more.’...

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. “Which road do I take?” she asked. “Where do you want to go?” was his response. “I don’t know,” Alice answered. “Then,” said the cat, “it doesn’t matter.”

Peers and Faqeers: →
mehreenkasana: [Trigger warning for rape] I never respected peers for several reasons. You do not need a mediator to talk to Allah. Constant reliance on a peer/faqeer leads eventually to a form of shirk. Suppose there is an honest peer and I’m certain there is one or two out there but if the person is willing to help you in your time of crisis, they will not ask for sexual or monetary...

If You Really Pay Attention, by Paula Underwood →
When I was a little bitty kiddy, about five, my Dad began a process … anytime somebody came and said something to us, my dad would say, “You remember what he said, honey girl?” I would tell my father what the person said until I got so good at it that I could repeat verbatim even long presentations of what the person had said. And he did this all the time. Finally, one day there was this old...

Pakistan court frees 5 in gang rape case →
carpe-cerevisi: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday acquitted and freed five men accused of gang-raping a village woman in 2002 on the orders of a tribal council. The case received worldwide attention, and the victim, Mukhtar Mai, became an international icon of women’s rights. The court ruling, which upheld an appeals court decision exonerating the men, left only one of...

Arabic Names Spell Trouble - Banks can't spell... →
mehreenkasana: International banks, acting on government orders to freeze assets from Libya, Egypt and Tunisia, are scouring hundreds of millions of client files for individuals on the new watch lists. But in doing so, bank compliance officers are grappling with a peculiar challenge: the myriad ways of transliterating Arabic names. The arcane problem is opening the door to niche players,...

Mother Of The Year →
In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth. The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of...

A gentle brush of his fingers, Sending shivers down my spine. In the love I see in his eyes, Is a love that equals mine. He greets me with a smile, And leaves me with a kiss. If he were to ever leave me, I couldn't imagine what I'd miss. Maybe it's his touch, Or the way he makes me feel. But whatever it is, I'm head over heels.

My Philosophy Guru » Mark Vernon →
Your recommended philosophy-guru is EPICURUS. Key fact: Epicurus, founder of Epicureanism, is probably the most misunderstood philosopher of antiquity. Must have: A delight in the countryside and gardens. Key promise: Peace and tranquillity. Key peril: Boredom. Most likely to say: “The true hedonist can find as much pleasure in a glass of chilled water as in a feast for a king.” ...

Number Spiral →
Number spirals are very simple. To make one, we just write the non-negative integers on a ribbon and roll it up with zero at the center. The trick is to arrange the spiral so all the perfect squares (1, 4, 9, 16, etc.) line up in a row on the right side:
